Crystalizing One Piece: My Devil Fruit Designs

One Piece is one of the most beloved shows in the anime community that has been around for a long time, bringing in new fans every day once they're willing to take on the 1000 episodes. If you're like me, I’m always on the hunt for good merch. Then I thought of devil fruits.

So, I searched it up. “Devil Fruits merch”. What popped up was devil fruit resin, 3d models made from polymer plastics, and even rubber. All of that is well and good, but I was looking for something more durable. Maybe even crystallized. I couldn’t find anything like that.

As a purple buff man once said, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”

And so, I did.

First up….

Nico Robin: The Hana Hana no Mi

What can I say about Robin’s devil fruit? I love it. Objectively, as a fact, with absolutely no bias whatsoever, I have to say it is the most beautiful devil fruit piece I have ever seen. The Instagram post gained so much love, and I don’t blame it. Just look at it!

Robin’s devil fruit took quite a bit of time. No biggie. It only took about eight hours to design. I’m a perfectionist to a fault, but it turned out just the way I had envisioned it. The hours I spent on Blender with cramped hands and dry eyes trying to create the petal engravings were pleasantly tedious and a wee bit excruciating.

But was it worth it? Oh yeah, baby.

When choosing the types of crystals, I always take into consideration how much detail I want to POP! Before designing, I had already decided on using rose quartz. I was nervous about how the petals would turn out since rose quarts can easily fade the outlines, so I made them as big as I possibly could while adding depth.

There were two materials I had in mind for Nico Robin’s devil fruit. It was between rose quartz and pink opal. Pink opal, in my unprofessional opinion, was a tad bit too bold for her devil fruit. For those who know her character, she gives off a more minimalistic, elegant, and classier vibe. Rose quartz reflects that with its subtle but gorgeous pink blush.

This beauty is currently sold out so if you happen to find it available, snatch one for yourself! You don’t want to miss it!

Doing my best to do your girl justice!

Trafalgar Law: The Ope Ope no Mi

Our next stop is Law’s devil fruit. The amount of time I spent designing this crystal is almost ten hours. Devil fruits that are more spherical shaped are much easier to design. However, this one is heart-shaped with more curvage. The ripples were also super tedious. But as you can see, it turned out amazing!

As I mentioned before, I am a bit of a perfectionist, so the hunt for the perfect stone began. This may be a common or uncommon thing other crystal business owners do, but I like to walk around local crystal shops and look through different types of crystals and stones. I was searching for something to pop out at me. At the time I was designing Law’s fruit, I wasn’t sure exactly what to use for him.

Then I spotted them.

The clouds parted and light fell upon the Red Jasper stones. An angelic choir began singing into a crescendo in the background as I approached the chosen ones.

Ok, that was an exaggeration. But I swear I thought I heard the music.

In the animated series, the details of the fruit appear to look slightly different. But I sort of thought about how the devil fruit would look in a more lifelike setting. I felt it would have looked thicker with a less cartoonish approach. I guess you can say my goal was to make it look as live-action as possible. This whole process took a minute since I was throwing myself into researching all these different methods such as “how to make a curve” and “how to make a heart.” You know, what you do when you have no f**king idea what you’re doing.

I wish I could have found an easier and faster way but that’s how it is when you create. If you’re an artist yourself or just held a paintbrush that one time, you can understand the hairpulling research I’m talking about. But here it is, your next obsession!

Tony Tony Chopper: Hito Hito no Mi

This next one takes us to the cute and beloved Chopper. After using Red Jasper for Law’s devil fruit, I knew I had to use the same material for Chopper’s mushroom. Red Jasper has a smooth surface I can work with much easier. The bright red color is also a huge bonus! As for figuring out the shape and style of the mushroom, there was an interesting source of inspiration. I thought it would be difficult to create a cute, chubby mushroom, but then I saw bath bombs that were inspired by One Piece. I figured if they could do it, so could I.

So, I busted out Blender and began designing. Originally, the whole crystal was Red Jasper, but to complete its look, the stem is painted white. And there you have it, the iconic Human Human Devil Fruit!

Monkey D. Luffy: Gomu Gomu no Mi

Last but not least, we have the first Devil Fruit I designed. Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi.

I have had questions about whether I’ll be using amethyst for this one. It did cross my mind, however, it is difficult to find a large enough block of amethyst to use. If I somehow did find one, it would be incredibly expensive to produce, and the price tag would be incredibly high. One of my main goals is to create customs (which can get expensive depending on what it is) and make them as affordable as I can. But don’t worry, it’s not entirely off the table. My wallet can look a little bit too skinny sometimes. I also understand that you may like to find something affordable but high-quality at the same time.

So, the yellow brick red led towards the wonderful Lepidolite!  The Lepidolite crystal is perfect with its deep purple characteristics. I like how the curvy texture of the Devil Fruit stands out in the opaque purple shade. I am proud to have achieved it by staying true to its original look. This one has to be one of the easiest devil fruits I have designed so far, mainly because spheres are easier to manage.

If you’re a fan of Luffy or One Piece in general, include this in your arsenal of collections!

More devil fruit restocks, and ideas are coming!
Stick around or comment if there are any devil fruits you want to see!

                                          By the way…
